It was a call to action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From History to Hope<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delivering the keynote address, UNDP Liberia Resident Representative Aliou Mamadou Dia challenged young Liberians to move beyond being observers of their country\u2019s story and become active architects of its future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking on the theme, \u201cFrom Liberia\u2019s History to Its Development Future: What Role for Young Liberians?\u201d Dia argued that a deeper understanding of history is essential for building peace, strengthening institutions, and accelerating development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He noted that history should not be viewed as a source of division, but as a valuable resource for learning, reconciliation, and progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA country\u2019s past should serve as a foundation for learning, reconciliation,, and progress rather than a source of division,\u201d Dia said. \u201cYoung people must draw lessons from Liberia\u2019s history and apply them to the challenges and opportunities facing the country today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He pointed to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai\u2019s recent call to revive the National History Project, originally recommended by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), as an important step in helping Liberians better understand their shared national journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Dia, preserving and telling Liberia\u2019s story is not simply about remembering the past. It is about shaping a more united future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Youth at the Center of Development<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With more than three-quarters of Liberia\u2019s population under the age of 35, Dia emphasized that the country\u2019s prospects are inseparable from the aspirations and opportunities available to its young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He highlighted the alignment between youth development priorities and national frameworks, including Liberia\u2019s ARREST Agenda and the forthcoming National Youth Policy 2025\u20132029, stressing that investments in education, skills development, governance, peacebuilding, and employment are critical to unlocking the country\u2019s potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInvesting in young people is investing in Liberia\u2019s future,\u201d he said, noting that young people must be equipped not only with knowledge and skills but also with opportunities to participate meaningfully in decision-making processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creating Pathways for Success<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of that commitment, Dia highlighted UNDP\u2019s support for youth empowerment initiatives, including the expansion of Liberia\u2019s National Cadet Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme offers recent university graduates practical work experience, mentorship, and professional development opportunities across all 15 counties. More than 1,000 graduates are expected to benefit from the initiative this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also pointed to platforms such as the National Youth Dialogue and YouthConnekt, which provide opportunities for young people to engage in national conversations, build networks, and contribute ideas to development efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dia further underscored the importance of Liberia\u2019s National Action Plan on Youth, Peace and Security 2025\u20132030, describing it as a roadmap for strengthening youth participation in peacebuilding and governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking beyond Liberia\u2019s borders, he highlighted the country\u2019s election to the United Nations Security Council for the 2026\u20132027 term, describing it as a milestone that offers young Liberians an opportunity to contribute to conversations around global peace and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His message to the audience was distilled into three simple but powerful words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRemember. Reconcile. Rebuild.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And with equal clarity, he called on both leaders and citizens to choose \u201cservice over self-interest, dialogue over division, evidence over rumor, inclusion over exclusion, and Liberia\u2019s progress over personal ambition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lessons from Liberia\u2019s Diplomatic Journey<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The summit\u2019s guest speaker, Ambassador-at-Large Robert Y. Lormia, drew on Liberia\u2019s diplomatic history to highlight the role of dialogue, negotiation, and strategic engagement in nation-building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reflecting on Liberia\u2019s early years, he described how diplomatic efforts helped secure international recognition for Africa\u2019s first independent republic and laid the foundation for the country\u2019s standing in the global community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cConstructive engagement remains essential to resolving disagreements and advancing shared interests,\u201d Lormia told participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He urged young people to emulate the patience, vision, and persistence demonstrated by Liberia\u2019s early leaders and diplomats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, he challenged citizens to take greater ownership of national development rather than relying solely on external support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLiberia\u2019s development is a responsibility we all share,\u201d he emphasized, encouraging young people to contribute wherever they find themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leadership Begins with Integrity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another keynote speaker, Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe, focused on the values that must underpin responsible leadership: integrity, accountability, respect for human rights, and adherence to the rule of law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He challenged participants to reject corruption and embrace fairness, inclusion, and transparency in both public and private life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than waiting for large-scale reforms, Gongloe encouraged young people to begin with practical actions in their own communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His message was straightforward: leadership is demonstrated not by titles but by choices, and every citizen has a role to play in building public trust and strengthening institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nurturing the Next Generation of Leaders<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opening the summit earlier, Madam Ellen Pratt-Harris, Executive Director of the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development, underscored the importance of creating spaces where young people can develop their leadership potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She highlighted the launch of the E De\u00e9k\u00e9 youth leadership initiative, which selected a cohort of emerging women leaders from across Africa following a highly competitive application process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme reflects a growing effort to expand opportunities for young women to build skills, strengthen networks, and take on leadership roles across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Call to Action<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As discussions concluded, one theme resonated throughout the day: understanding Liberia\u2019s history is only the beginning.
