FISH TOWN, River Gee County — Oct. 8, 2026: An eminent son of River Gee County, Theophilus Quaye, is calling on the Liberian government to urgently replace health workers who recently retired from service in the county.
Quaye said his concern is particularly focused on the health sector, where he believes the retirement of experienced personnel has created gaps that could affect health care delivery across River Gee County.
According to Quaye, the River Gee County Health Team has 331 employees working across 20 health facilities.
He said the workforce includes 227 skilled health professionals, including midwives, registered nurses, doctors, physician assistants, and laboratory technicians, as well as 131 volunteers who support health care delivery.
Quaye urged the national government to move quickly to fill vacancies created by the retirement exercise, saying replacements should be based on the qualifications and professional categories of those who have left the service.
“If the government is planning to conduct retirement exercises in the country, there should also be a plan to replace those who are retiring,” Quaye said, emphasizing the need for replacements to be assigned promptly.
He said River Gee is already struggling with a shortage of qualified health professionals and warned that leaving vacant positions unfilled could place additional pressure on the county’s health facilities.
Quaye called on the government to ensure that health facilities across the county have adequate numbers of qualified professionals to provide essential services.
He also encouraged citizens and retirees in River Gee County to continue supporting efforts to improve health care delivery while awaiting government action on the issue.
